On 21st August 2026, in London, the arc of a remarkable career found fitting recognition as Dr. Anslem Asehosem Egun, MBBS, FRCS Glasg, FRCS Eng, was conferred with the African Medical Excellence Award by The Voice Achievers Award – a celebration of African brilliance that has reshaped medicine on the world stage.
It is an award that could have been crafted for him alone.
A Consultant Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon and Associate Divisional Medical Director for Surgery at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester Medical School, Dr. Egun has spent over 24 years as a Consultant defining what excellence truly means: not just clinical mastery, but the courage to heal the systems that deliver care.
His journey began at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 1987, before he honed his craft in Britain’s most revered theatres – King’s College Hospital London, Manchester Royal Infirmary and Royal Preston Hospital. Awarded FRCS Glasgow in 1994 and FRCS England in 2002, and appointed Consultant in 2003, he has since become one of the most influential African surgical leaders in the NHS.

As Clinical Director for Vascular Surgery from 2016 to 2020, he led the strategic reconfiguration of vascular services across the North West of England, centralising complex care to deliver safer outcomes, optimise procurement and secure workforce sustainability. As Associate Divisional Medical Director since 2020, he provides medical leadership across five surgical specialties, chairs the Safety and Quality and Workforce and Wellbeing Committees, leads investigations into serious incidents to ensure organisational learning, chairs the Trust’s Venous Thromboembolism Group driving NICE compliance, and leads its National Emergency Laparotomy Audit.
Education is his legacy. As examiner and Lead Examiner for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons, member of the Specialty Advisory Committee in Vascular Surgery and Liaison Member for Scotland, and the trusted surgeon appointed by the GMC to retrain consultants returning to practice, he is the custodian of standards. His global mentorship extends from Salford, where he was Programme Director for the MSc in Vascular Surgery, to Sri Lanka, where he leads the Medical Training Initiative with the Sri Lanka Board of Surgery.

Elected to the Council of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland in 2021 and to its Executive in 2025, where he chairs the Workforce Committee and serves as Director of the Vascular Society and Circulation Foundation Charity, he is tackling surgery’s most human challenges – mentorship, retention, and eradicating bullying and undermining through the Society’s Mentorship Programme and Faculty for Conflict Resolution training he co-developed.
His academic work on peripheral arterial disease, diabetic foot care, and exercise prescription for claudication, his peer-reviewed publications, supervision of higher degrees, and role as Principal Investigator for major carotid trials and the EVAR Registry, have earned him six NHS Clinical Excellence Awards and a Quality Care Award.
The African Medical Excellence Award is therefore more than a trophy. It is an acknowledgement of a Nigerian son who left Lagos with a dream, mastered surgery in Britain, and returned that mastery as leadership, teaching and compassion for all.
